Week 9 Newsletter & Schedule

October 9, 2020

Hello Orange Families,

Hopefully, your children are taking to their new responsibilities and becoming in charge of their schedule. A few parents noted at our Parent Meeting yesterday that their children are becoming more self-sufficient and it has been helpful for the parents to carry less of the “load”. While it is very powerful for them to take charge of their learning, a side benefit can be to alleviate a little of the stress on you, too. Yay! We have noticed a few more kids coming in a bit late to Zooms which could be a sign of the adjustment and a minor bump on the road to progress. One strategy we use to empower the class to take charge of their learning is when the kids ask us something they should already know, we turn the question back to them a la, “What does your schedule say?” Feel free to incorporate that strategy :)

New items to note:

Author Visit

On Tuesday, 10/13, at 9am, instead of our usual morning meeting we have a special author visit! The talented Scott Rothman & Pete Oswald will virtually present their story:

Brave knights, fire-breathing dragons, and underwear -- every kid's favorite things in one book illustrated by bestselling artist Pete Oswald! Sir Percival is a great knight in every way, except for one thing: He is terrified that an Underwear Dragon will come and destroy the kingdom. But when the unthinkable happens, Cole is the only knight left standing (and just an assistant knight at that!) Cole must use all of his newly acquired skills to battle the fearsome dragon and avoid a catastrophe. Luckily, an unfortunate underwear mishap changes everything and Cole triumphs in this hilarious and triumphant tale!

The authors are signing copies of their funny book and if you would like to order one here is the link. Orders are due by next Friday, 10/16:

**Ms. Denise in Yellow Cluster will pick up all the book orders at the store and bring them to Open. We will send them home on the subsequent pick up day. When you place the order, select: “I would like contact free parking lot pickup at the store”. Then, in the order comments section, type in the box:  “Denise Benjamin (Open School teacher) will pick up my order”.

Open’s Virtual Library

Our fabulous librarian, Ms. Pam, added some fun read alouds to her virtual library. Enjoy these new titles:

Creepy Carrots, Nobody Hugs A Cactus, Heckedy Peg, and Sulwe

The PDF to access her virtual library  is on our class website and in the weekly email.

First Friday Fun (Friends’ Event)

Mark your calendars for our next First Friday event on Fri., Nov. 6th!  The event you’ve all been waiting for …. comic book making! Grades K- 2 will have a Zoom at 3pm and the Zoom for Grades 3-5 will commence at 4pm.

Lexia/DreamBox minutes

We are now checking Lexia & Dreambox minutes. If your child doesn’t hit their minutes for that week, we’ll send you an email the following Monday morning. The assignment for Dreambox is 30 minutes/day and at least 5 lessons. Even if they’ve hit their 5 lessons, we still want them to complete their 30 minutes a day. Lexia is also 60 minutes a week. Lexia is a little confusing because Lexia will give the kids an individual goal of let’s say 40 minutes/week. We’d like them to complete 60 minutes a week regardless of Lexia’s goal.

Parent Guests

Our parent guests are awesome! Thank you Gina (Oliver’s mom) for reading the beautiful story The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.
