Weekly Update - Oct. 25, 2020

Our costumed pick up / drop off is this Friday from 2:30 - 3:30.  Costumes are not required, but we thought it would be a fun way to celebrate Halloween being the next day, especially as trick or treating is so limited this year.  We’re going to set it up a little like they are trick-or-treating, and have them come to different stations around the parking lot to get different things.  If your child doesn’t want to get out of the car or participate, then we will bring things to the car instead.  If you are donating treats for the pickup, please have them in the office by Tuesday so that there is time to get them all organized.  Please also let us know if you can’t make it on Friday.  We can either leave your child’s bag in the office or arrange for it to be dropped off for you.

For the pickup, please have your child wear a mask and bring his/her bag with the following in it:

  • Immune System Project, if it was done on paper
  • Cooperation One Pager
  • Angles and Lines Packet
  • Balance Math Packet (or packets, if the second one was chosen and is done)
  • His/her first Skillsheet packet (or more if more have been done)
  • Any finished books
  • Anything else that might be done (cursive, brain boosters etc)
  • If you have both of your child’s bags at home, please bring both of them so that we can keep one for next time.  It’s really helpful for us to have a bag for each student at school so that we can get them ready in advance.

Encourage your child to pre-choose books to borrow using our book request form.  We will still have a cart of books to look at that day as well.  Our next pickup day will be on Friday, November 13th.

And speaking of books, we will be finishing Front Desk next week and have decided to go ahead and read the sequel as our next book.  If you are interested in ordering signed copies of either book, here is the link for that:

If you choose pick up at store and put in the comments that Denise Benjamin will be picking them up for you, we are happy to do that.  It may not happen until at least the next pickup, however, so if you want the books sooner, you might want to have them sent to your house, or pick them up yourself.  You can combine picking them up with a private shopping appointment at the store, which is an amazing place.

We will be having a parent drop in this Wednesday, from 3:30 - 4, if anyone has any questions about anything.  We’ll use the parent meeting zoom code, as usual.

Don’t forget to sign up for our Remind notifications.  The code is @f6cafd.  It’s really useful as we use it to send out reminders and any last minute changes that might need to happen (like on Thursday when Denise’s internet was out and we needed the students to sign in to a different zoom).

Here’s some of what is coming up next week:

Reading:  We are continuing to look at graphic novels.  The students are going to be doing a group scavenger hunt where they will be looking for good examples of different elements of graphic novels and analyzing how they help tell the story.  This is a great way to get them to start thinking more deeply about what they are reading and to practice many levels of observation, inference, and comprehension.

Writing:  We are going to be starting to work on an opinion piece about what each student would identify as the most important issue for a president to focus on right now.

Math:  We are continuing our work with place value, geometry, and computation.  We are going to be having our aides doing skillsheet check-ins and work / help times after math zoom meetings on Mondays and Fridays, so please help your child remember to have his/her skillsheets with him/her on those days.

Science:  The end of unit project is due on October 30th, so this week the students should be finishing up their work and looking it over to see if there’s anything that needs adding, changing, or fixing.

Social Studies:  This week we will be talking about voter suppression and the 3 branches of government and their responsibilities.

Expiration Date:
